Tiamat’s Wrath – Not the best Expanse Book ..but not too shabby either April 26, 2019

Wow does this book start off with bang.

Chrisjen Avasarala.

That could’ve been the ending of any other Expanse book but that’s how this sucker begins…and it’s just a side note really too.

We literally COULD.NOT.PUT.THIS.BOOK.DOWN it was such a page turner..from that very first page.

Who is Tiamat? we still have no idea either. What we do know is that at the end of this book most of the crew of Roci are back together, Laconia is diminished and we still have no clue who destroyed the gate builders.

Orville Season 2 Finale was AWESOME April 26, 2019

orville-season2TIME travel, alternate reality and multi-verse stuff is common across SciFi shows.

What The Orville did in its Season 2 finale – “The Road Not Taken” was nothing short of amazing.

RATHER than some grandiose idea for time travel, a simple thing – Kelly not going on a second date with Ed, is enough to change the course of history and end up with Kaylon destroying most organic life.

Reminds us a bit of the classic Star Trek: The Next Generation Episode “Tapestry” in which Q challenges Picard to remake his life. Instead of fighting the Narsican, he doesn’t and never ends up commanding the Enterprise. That doesn’t however end up with the end of the Federation though – life just goes ..on.

In Orville – it’s different – that simplest of things of human interaction a second date is the thread that unravels a whole timeline. It’s so simple and submline and yet so very excellent.

The Orville overall was amazing through Season 2 with basic human themes. Early on with the Jaloga – the once a year a Mochlan has to ‘relieve himself’ really set that tone.

We can hardly wait to see what’s in store for The Orville in Season 3.

screen shot 2019-01-14 at 6.12.59 pmCBS ALL ACCESS” GOES BLACK OPS WITH MICHELLE YEOH FOR NEW “STAR TREK” SERIES BASED ON SECTION 31

Jan. 14, 2019 – CBS All Access today announced plans to further expand the “Star Trek” universe with a new live-action series in development starring Michelle Yeoh. The series will expand on Yeoh’s current role as a member of Starfleet’s Section 31 division, a shadow organization within the Federation, on STAR TREK: DISCOVERY, which debuts its second season Thursday, Jan. 17 exclusively on CBS All Access in the U.S., and is distributed concurrently by CBS Studios International on Netflix in 188 countries and in Canada on Bell Media’s Space channel and OTT service CraveTV.

The series will be produced by CBS Television Studios, Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment. Alex Kurtzman, Heather Kadin, Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth will serve as executive producers. Aaron Baiers will serve as co-executive producer along with Bo Yeon Kim, and Erika Lippoldt will also write the series.

“Michelle has shattered ceilings, broken boundaries, and astonished us with her grace and gravitas for decades. As a human, I adore her. As an actor, I revere her,” said Alex Kurtzman. “Erika and Boey are remarkable, exciting writers who bring a fresh perspective to the world of ‘Star Trek,’ and we’re all thrilled to explore the next wild chapter in the life of Captain Philippa Georgiou.”

“I’m so excited to continue telling these rich ‘Star Trek’ stories,” said Michelle Yeoh. “Being a part of this universe and this character specifically has been such a joy for me to play. I can’t wait to see where it all goes – certainly I believe it will go ‘where no WOMAN has ever gone before!’”

Michelle Yeoh is recognized as one of the greatest and the most successful actresses from the east. She can most recently be seen starring in John M. Chu’s romantic comedy “Crazy Rich Asians,” and in CBS’ STAR TREK: DISCOVERY. The former Bond girl is best known for her roles in Ang Lee’s “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Tiger, Hidden Dragon” and its sequel, Rob Marshall’s “Memoirs of a Geisha,” Roger Spottiswoode’s “Tomorrow Never Dies”and Danny Boyle’s “Sunshine.” Michelle also starred in Luc Besson’s critically acclaimed “The Lady” and voiced a role in the DreamWorks animated hit “Kung Fu Panda 2.”

The development of this new untitled series is the latest expansion of the “Star Trek” franchise. In addition to the hit original series STAR TREK: DISCOVERY, returning with season two on Thursday, Jan. 17, and STAR TREK: SHORT TREKS, a series of short stories tied to STAR TREK: DISCOVERY and the overall “Star Trek”universe, CBS has announced a new untitled “Star Trek” series featuring Sir Patrick Stewart, reprising his iconic role as Jean-Luc Picard, as well as its first animated series, STAR TREK: LOWER DECKS, developed by Emmy Award winner Mike McMahan (“Rick and Morty”).

Review: The Orville S2E3 Home – aka Goodbye Alara and Thanks for Pickles January 10, 2019

Ok spoiler first. Alara is leaving the show.

Now for the show review – we love Orville and this was very different than the first two show so far this season (S2E1 JALOJA was SOOOO good). This time though we get yet another character story, this time about security officer Alara.

It was nice to see her home world/ and the dramatic twist with the house guests. The drama really peaked when Alara’s dad was forced to put his hand in the boiling pot.

WOW.

At first we though ok, the guy just didn’t like the ladle, but then it got dark — and good. Till that point a boring show.

The FINAL Alara send off was also kinda cheesy, but the gift ..wow a jar of pickles…a throwback to the pilot when she opened the jar of pickles for the captain.

THANK YOU NEXT!

Ok so Alara is gone but we get another of Seth McFarlan’s buddies to join the show. This time it’s Patrick John Warburton  – aka the voice of Joe from The Family Guy.

In perhaps the biggest snub of the new Disney era – the official poster for Star Wars The Force Awakens omits Luke Skywalker.

Is this some kind of Sith plot? why on the Maker’s Soul would Disney ever do such a terrible dis-service to Mark Hamill/Luke Skywalker?? WHY DISNEY?

Ok Minority Report isn’t progressing quite as well as we might have hoped, but for now we’re still enjoying the SciFi / future forecasting bits. Last week’s episode had a real great one too with the $500 Obama US Bill.

NO THIS is not an epic piece of fiction but it’s brilliant fun.
Journey to Star Wars: The Force Awakens Smuggler’s Run: A Han Solo Adventure (Star Wars: Journey to Star Wars: the Force Awakens) is a really great slice/incident/story in the post Episode IV era where we see a Solo in his prime.

Not quite done being the smuggler and not quite the hero – yet – but on his way.

The way the story is told as a flashback in a bar – is a wonderful narrative tool too.

YES we know this is a middle-school book / but make no mistake about it this is a book that any Star Wars fan will enjoy (at any age).

Minority ReportOk so we liked the first episode of Minority Report enough to watch the second episode. Another beautiful looking show, with lots of high-tech wizardry…this time out we noticed a touch screen projection player on a baby stroller (neat!) and a few other small things…including the bracelet from the singles club that does the saliva test to match potential mates.

The plot thickens a bit here ..and we see at the end that Amanda sees Vega putting the precogs back in the milk bath…

So long story short, a good outing and we’ll be back to watch episode three next week!

#MinorityReport is the BEST New SciFi Show – and Toronto LOOKS Fantastic (and Futuristic!) September 21, 2015

Minority ReportWOW! We really enjoyed watching the new Fox Minority Report show.

Set ten years after the end of the event in the movie (based on a Philip K Dick story), the precogs ..the individuals that could see crime in the future are .. individuals.

They have been set free, and are living among us. It’s an interesting sequel and continuation of the original story where the precogs aren’t seen as individuals.

Now in addition to the ‘minority report’ that is the dissension of one of the precogs about if a crime will actually occur / we have personality differences and conflicts across the three pre-cogs.

Then there is the tech…futuristic in the Tom Cruise movie and still futuristic in this show.

And of course there is Toronto.

Toronto City Hall makes an appearance as does the Royal Conservatory of Music, Brookfield Place and even Roy Thompson Hall. To Toronto fans, it’s a joy and delight to see the futuristic city.

Let’s hope that FOX doesn’t pull the plug pre-maturely on the pre-cogs. But then again this is the Netflix era. If FOX does bail (as it has in the past with Firefly and even the Sarah Connor Chronicles), we don’t doubt it could find a home elsewhere. This is great story telling and we’re looking forward to the future of this show. (thought he precogs already know what that future is!)

Star Wars Aftermath – journey to the force awakens : Short Review: This Isn’t the Book You’ve Been Waiting For September 14, 2015

FINALLY the first novel of the new Star Wars Canon in the ‘Journey to The Force Awakens’ era… YES!! we were really excited to get our hands on Aftermath: Star Wars: Journey to Star Wars: The Force Awakensand had pre-ordered as soon as it showed up on Amazon.

While this is an interesting read, it’s far from the calibre of Star Wars books that we’re used to ..

This took a meandering path, with more disconnected plotlines than we could track.

Sure the Empire is on the run after Endor and this book summarizes that and give multiple view into that ‘aftermath’

This book does not however have any measure of well conceived, properly constructed plot for the primary story, that of a backwater planet episode overcoming the final shackles of Empire. It’s the pulpiest type of fan fiction quality and to be frank we wanted more. More color, more depth more of the goodness we have come to expect from the expanded Star Wars Universe.

The predictable oh he’s dead, nope he’s not, he escaped (or she – as is the case with the pilot Nora) was annoying to say the least.

Not to say this is a *bad* book and it’s certainly not the worst Star Wars book we’ve even read in recent years, it’s just that with the new movie, we want MORE.

At long last Star Wars has returned to Marvel as we knew it would when Disney bought Dark Horse.
Here at ShowMeSciFi, We’re not particularly thrilled by the move, after all the years we diligently collected Dark Horse and learned its canon. Now that’s all gone.
Instead we have this sh*t.
Characters that don’t quite look right (yet), and simple Han Solo tale where somehow he isn’t shot onsite when landing on an Imperial outpost on a Correlian moon, and Leia still hasn’t (officially) fallen in love with him/ maried him and Jacen, Jania and Anakin etc etc.
So we’re at step 1.

Let’s hope step 2 pick up that pace, improves the artwork and the story too, otherwise Marvel second kick at the Star Wars Universe, won’t be any more successful than the first time around

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: The Missing – aka Dr Pulaski and Dr Crusher Hug it out.. December 26, 2014

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: The Missing is another piece of the post-Fall puzzle – and a highly enjoyable piece at that.

This is the post-Fall new DS9 -yup the same era as the Quark eNovella we recently reviewed – but this is a more serious book.

DS9 is still getting its footing back, but this story isn’t about the station as much as it is about Dr. Crusher – who in this book is the Chief Medical Officer (after Bashir left / now with Section 31) – all part of the ruse Beverley created along with Jean-Luc in the Fall.

Crusher meets up with Dr. Pulaski (CMO of Enterprise in Season 2) and that’s a key theme in the story – so too is the return of Odo – and oh yeah – more insight into the secretive Tzenkthi.

Overall – The Missing is a FANTASTIC book and one that we consumed in less than a day , because it was such a great page turning story.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: Lust’s Latinum Lost (and Found) isn’t a typical Star Trek story – this is the first we’ve ever read that focuses just on Quark – and it’s the real deal. The Laws of Acquisition are oft quoted, the pursuit of Latinum a primary goal.

This would have made a fantastic teleplay live episode – it’s that good, funny, humorous and engaging throughout.

Quark is just trying to make a buck (or a bar or two of Latinum) in the new DS9 / post Fall era and the way he’s going to do is via an erotic (semi) holosuite program with a Vulcan.

Yeah – a Vulcan those non-emotional pointy eared…..(except for Pon Far time!)

Star Trek: Department of Temporal Investigations – The Collectors by Christopher Bennett is a really solid Trek story.

DTI favorite pair of time traveling investigators find themselves 20 million years in the future and with not one / but two Jenna Noi’s in tow.

Yeah it’s good.

A short, but fun time traveling romp and well with the time and $$.

Star Trek: Section 31: Disavowed isn’t a good book, it’s a GREAT Star Trek book. From the first page to the last, this is a well thought out story, with alternate timeline, mirror universe, section 31 and Bashir (after the Fall).

We had no idea going in what we were getting into, simply put, we haven’t read much Section 31, but the whole Star Trek universe in the post-Fall era has left us hungry for as much Trek as we can find.

This book continues the post Fall story, Breen/Typhon Pact types still trying to get the upper hand/ Section 31 trying to help (?) The Federation and of course, our hero Bashir to pull it all together.

The real joy in this book though is the wonderful timeline storyline which all gets pulled together in the end – no spoilers here  – this book has an amazing finish.

Star Wars the Force Awakens

Star Wars the Force Awakens

Remember the very first trailer for Star Wars Episode I?

Back then we remember being amazed by the new double-bladed saber that Darth Maul had. Who knew you could have a double-bladed saber?

Well here we are more than a decade later and the first new trailer for the relaunch of Star Wars once again has a new lightsaber.

This time, it’s not a double-side blade, but rather what we’re going to call the ‘Sith Hilt’ ; not sure if this weapon can be more (or less) effective in battle; but it sure does look cool.

And what of the Sith that wields this blade?  we know nothing…yet

Stormtroopers aren’t the only ones that get a new look in Star Wars The Force Awakens.

X-Wing pilots get an updated helmet and flight suit in the new movie.

The actual X-Wing looks mostly the same as the classic model, though now we get to see it fight in-atmosphere too.

Star Wars the Force Awakens

The first teaser trailer for Star Wars VII, gives fans the first peek at the new look of Stormtroopers.

These are not Episode IV New Hope Troopers and they’re not Episode II Attack of the Clones clone troopers either.

Rather the new look stormtroopers look like a hybrid of the Episode IV and Episode II looks to create something new.

Star Wars the Force Awakens

Star Wars the Force Awakens

The first teaser trailer only gives us 88 seconds but it already adds some … color.

Troopers started out as all being clones – of bounty hunter Bobba Fett and his pseudo Caucasian skin color.

In The Force Awakens our first character glimpse is of a stormtrooper of color.

non-clone-stormtroopers
